Long Vowels and Silent E

In many short words, a final silent e can change the vowel before it. This useful pattern works in many common words, but it does not work in every English word.

Discover how final e can change a word

A vowel can represent different sounds. Compare complete words, notice the spelling, and use the pattern as a reading strategy rather than an absolute rule.

Compare short and long vowels

Compare cap and cape. The a sounds different. In this lesson, long vowel means that the vowel sound is similar to the name of the vowel letter.

Use final silent e as a reading strategy

In many words with vowel + consonant + e, the final e is silent, but it can change the preceding vowel sound.

In many short words, a final silent e can change the vowel before it.

  1. Look: Is there an e at the end?
  2. Check: Is there usually one consonant between the vowel and the e?
  3. Try: Read the vowel with its long sound.
  4. Check: Does the word make sense?

This is a useful pattern. It works in many common words, but it does not work in every English word.

The final e is silent

Long e with e_e

The e-consonant-e pattern is less common in everyday English. Pet and Pete show the silent-e principle, while long e is often written in other ways.

Long u with u_e

Cube is the main model. In British English, long u in cube commonly includes a y sound before the vowel.

English accents can realise long u in more than one valid way. Focus learners on the complete word rather than an isolated sound.
